For my entire life, I have been trying to figure out the meaning of love.

What was it? How did you know what it felt like? How do you know when it's real? Was it the yearning that called you from somewhere in the great beyond? Was it as impossible as people said for this bright wished for happiness to exist? Was there one love meant for each of us or did it evolve as we turned the pages of our lives? How do you know when you've found it?

This lead me to dig deeper into soul mates, twin flames, twin souls and sacred union. I became a student of love watching its multifaceted stories unfold around me hoping with each chapter to gain some deeper insight into this deep mystery that called to the very marrow of my bones.

About seven years ago, I came across a West African Adinkra symbol that caught my eye. It was called "ODO NNYEW FIE KWAN" or "Love Never Loses Its Way Home." A beautiful symbol of the enduring power of real love. A reminder to trust in love, in the unseen, in the possibility that it lives somewhere on the horizon. A reminder that love would always somehow find its way where it needed to be no matter what.

Was it possible that love never lost sight of us? Was love something that was ever flowing to us, even on the roughest, darkest and most uncertain seas? How do we trust in something so often talked about and yet so often unseen? Why was it so easy to miss?

We hide from love. We hide in old relationships, old lives and old beliefs. In our perceived unworthiness of real love, we shield ourselves with what no longer fits. We wish on every falling star for love while silently doubting it exists at all. We write about it, sing songs about it and dedicate our waking lives thinking about it, all the while doubting our own deserving of that which we dream of. We ache for it and then hide under the blankets closing our eyes tightly.

What are we so afraid of?

Vulnerability. Surrender. Letting go of control. Believing. Change. Being unworthy. Being real. Trusting. Being seen. Releasing old beliefs. Hope. Rejection. All the components we fight against while desiring to open up completely and let someone in.

We are so afraid of rejection, we swallow our words. We are so blind to our worthiness and deserving, we swallow our truth. We are so deaf to the call of our heart, we swallow our deepest feelings, needs and desires.

Oh weary warrior, lay down the heavy armor that covers your heart. The time to fight against the tides of love is over.

Love never loses its way home, it's within us all along; a shining beacon rooted deeply on our shores. It's always flowing to us and inside of us. Unyielding in its power, unwavering in its belief and undying in its devotion, it never dies. Our task is to believe in it and not lose faith when darkness rises and it becomes hard to see. It's still there, with the power to breathe life and fire into once stale lungs.

Our greatest challenge is to embrace the whole of who we are and love ourselves completely enough to never stop believing in our worthiness of the love we dream of. When we truly embody the knowledge that love is something real that we are born deserving, it's easier to have faith in its existence and to not sacrifice ourselves or settle for any less. It becomes easier to know deep in our hearts that love can never loses its way home to us, because we are love and this is all an unfolding path of love. That the real love that is meant for us will always find a way and that trusting in it is part of believing in love.

And so, onward we go continuing our eternal journey deciphering the language of love.

May we travel well.
