One of the hardest things to deal with is the lack of control we feel when our world turns upside down.

As humans, we like to convince ourselves that we have control over everything around us. While we do make choices each and every day that influence the outcome of our lives, sometimes things are beyond our control. This can be very frustrating and leave us feeling very helpless in the grand scheme of things. But accepting that some things are not ours to command and allowing that this is change we have to flow with is something that we all must do from time to time.

Restorative Yoga poses can help us to relax and ease the body when we are dealing with control issues.

Corpse pose or Savasana is something that we can all do to unwind after a long day, bring some peace during stress or to ease the body when it is tense. I usually do it at the end of a Yoga session, but it can be done anytime on its own. To begin, lay down on a yoga mat on the floor. If you do not have a yoga mat, lay a blanket down on the floor for some cushioning. If you feel called, you can drape an additional blanket over the body or an eye pillow on the eyes to provide some healing weight.

Lay down on your back with your arms on the mat at your sides, palms up towards the ceiling. Close your eyes and your mouth. Allow your body to completely let go and melt into the floor. Let go of trying to keep yourself rigid. Allow your jaw to soften and your tongue to ease. Soften your eyes, don't hold them squinted tightly. The feet have a tendency to fall to the sides as you relax. Allow the relaxation of your body. Notice any areas of body that are rigid or being held tightly. Invite them to melt a little more. Stay like this as long as you wish, focusing on the breath.

Some people lay quietly. I love to listen to this sometimes as well or something else relaxing: Temple of Silence

If you are processing a lot of intense emotions, the body may move further into release by crying. There is no need to try to control this. This is an allowing practice. Go with what the body needs in this moment.

When you are finished, slowly open your eyes and wiggle your fingers, then your toes.

Begin to move the body slowly, easing back into the moment. Take your time, sitting up and taking a few deep, centering breaths. Corpse pose is wonderful for bringing us back to the moment. It helps us surrender the body into peace and focus on our breath. It can help us to connect with surrender and move into allowing.
