Autumn is a time for celebrating abundance.

Waves of amber grain flow freely in the fields awaiting harvest. Ripe fruit hangs heavy on tree branches. The hot Summer sunlight fades and the warm days turn cool as Fall creeps in. The days grow shorter and magic fills the air, spiced with the transformation that Autumn always brings.

As the Wheel of the Year spins the seasons, we come to the Autumn Equinox on September 21/22 in the Northern Hemisphere, a harvest celebration also called Mabon. Night and day are equal length and all things are in balance. We are in transition from a time of growth during Summer to a time of deep reflection in Winter.

Mabon is the second harvest festival and during this time we celebrate the abundance of the world.

We celebrate the sacrifice of the fallen grain to feed the people and know that with the Spring it will rise again to nourish. This is a time of merriment as we look to all the abundance that surrounds us and celebrate past accomplishments.

As we harvest and clear away the treasures provided, we move towards unearthing the soil beneath.

A time of transformation weaves its spell upon the Earth and everything begins to shift. We move from being externally focused to once more putting energy within to our roots and collect energy for the coming Winter period.

As we move towards the lessening of the light, we enter the realm of the Dark Goddess. Persephone, Goddess of the Spring and Underworld will venture once more to the land of darkness. As such, this is a time we are all called to go within.

Demeter, Goddess of the Grain shifts from nourishing the abundance of the Earth to mourning the loss of her daughter Persephone, as she reclaims her throne as Queen of the Underworld. Persephone is the bride of Hades, Lord of the Underworld. She remains for half of the year with him below and spends the remainder of the year in the world above with her mother, during the time when all things flourish. But without the love and care of Demeter, the fields begin to wither and the trees begin to fade.

Persephone, the embodiment of the Spring Goddess turned Lady of the Underworld, shows us the turning of the wheel from birth in the spring to death in Winter back to birth once more, reminding us that all things have the power to be reborn.

Autumn offers us proof of our efforts as we harvest what was and rebirth for the future as we move into the unknown.

And so as the leaves release their resistance and let go of the branch during the Fall, so we too look to let go of the old and move deeper into the unfolding that waits for us, singing like a siren song in the darkness. In the coming twilight, we open to the transformation that flows and surrender to this time of celebrating what was, grieving what has ended and opening to all that has yet to be.
